What to Say Wednesday: Don’t Ever Say

What to say Wednesday 1It is a bit late in the day…But it’s still Wednesday!

Here is today’s tip on supporting parents through baby loss…

Don’t ever say:

You have been through a lot in your life, you will make it through this too.

While someone may be a resilient person, there is nothing that can prepare them for the loss of a child. This statement downplays the pain and simply compares it to other “hard” life experiences.

Saying this also insinuates that a parent should “toughen up.” The truth is, losing a child doesn’t toughen you, it breaks you. It completely changes your life forever. While the parents will in time adjust to a different “normal,” it is not something they will just “get over.”

Something better to say would be, “I can’t imagine how hard this must be” or “This must be so difficult to go through.”
