Restore…an Excerpt From My Spiritual Journal

restoring-hope-14As I was praying this morning, I felt God impress a word on my heart…Restore

I began to hear Him say: I will restore you. I will restore your peace. I will restore your hope. I will restore your life. And yes, I will even restore your joy. I am the Restorer of your soul…

Knowing how deeply I needed these things, I quickly went to write down the words God was speaking to me, so I could remember them.

I suddenly was reminded of the verse in the Psalms that says:

“He restores my soul” Psalm 23:3

God is the restorer of my soul.

As I pondered this, I began to wonder what the actual definition of the word “restore” is. Here is what I found:

1. to bring back into existence, use, or the like; reestablish: to restore order.

2. to bring back to a state of health, soundness, or vigor.

3. to give back; make return or restitution of (anything taken away or lost).

Wow, this is exactly what I needed to hear.

Psalm 23 goes on to say…

“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”

Even in the face of death, God is the restorer of our souls.

I remember my frustration in reading these verses right after Esther died. I didn’t feel any comfort. I didn’t feel any restoration of my soul. I even remember thinking that this was way beyond just the valley of the shadow of death. This was death. REAL, COLD, HARD, and PERMANENT.

And to some extent, this is true. Death hurts. The real pain of loss can run so deep. It can last for the rest of this earthly life.

And yet, even in the midst of it, God wants to restore. He wants to restore hope, life, peace, and even joy. I don’t fully understand this yet, but I want to. I am trusting God to do just want He said and restore me.

Friend, I don’t know what you have lost today, or what needs “brought back, given back, or reestablished” in your life. But I can assure you this: God wants to restore your soul. He wants to be with you even in the valleys of the shadow of death, or death itself.

Will you join with me, and let God be the Restorer of what has been lost?
