An Update and a Prayer Request for Baby

Wow, it’s been a long time since I have posted!

The last month has been interesting, busy, and challenging. The reality of a new baby coming soon has finally set in. I have been relishing the punches, kicks, and rolls of this little one. I have also been praying, standing, believing, and persevering through some not so good news.

I have hesitated to write about this, not wanting to create drama or give voice to needless fear and worry. It has also just been easier to share concerns with a very few close people and not have to answer lots of questions. But Adam and I would like to share some information now since we have a wonderful network of friends and family to be praying with us.

At our 22 week ultrasound, our doctor found what appeared to be a slight concern with our baby’s right kidney. Everything else appeared normal and healthy. We were told they would follow up in a few weeks, and if there was still concern, we would see a specialist in a larger city a couple hours away. At 26 weeks, the problem was still there, so for better clarity of the situation, we were referred to a Maternal Fetal Medicine doctor (Specialist/High Risk OB).

Yesterday, we had our initial appointments. We have been praying for a good report and we found out we still need more prayer.

In simple terms, it appears the right kidney has either not formed properly or is not really existent. The doctors were unable to determine for sure what was going on with the kidney due to possible blockages or enlargement of certain parts of the renal system.

The left kidney appears structurally sound, but there is a slight enlargement of the drainage duct. This is not necessarily a problem, but needs to be watched closely.

My amniotic fluid level is normal, which indicates there is adequate kidney function. YEAH! (One kidney can do the work of two.)

The general conclusion of the doctors right now is that the left kidney is functioning well, while the right kidney may have no function or little function.

We will be following up with this specialty clinic to watch how our baby grows and look for any changes. We will also will be talking with a pediatric urologist who will monitor our progress, look at the findings and help determine a treatment plan for after the baby is born. We are still waiting to see what everything looks like as the baby continues to grow.

Obviously, we are upset. This pregnancy has already been incredibly stretching and stressful. Not knowing exactly what is going on is troubling. Yet we are hopeful in God, knowing He will sustain us and our baby. He is faithful. We are also thankful for an overall prognosis that this little one will be alright.

We are asking for these specific prayers right now:

– A Miracle! (Two healthy kidneys)

– Improvements to be seen as the baby grows

– Peace for Adam and I as we walk through this time

Thank you all for your care and support!

On a lighter note, having continual ultrasounds has offered us the chance to see our baby often. He/She is super cute and loves putting their hands over their face! We even got to see an adorable little yawn yesterday. We can’t wait to finally meet this little one in just a little while!

  1. I’m sorry to hear you are having to deal with an additional worry on top of the already huge thing of being pregnant after a loss. However, our God is powerful and nothing is out of His control. You and this baby are firmly in His hand. I will be praying specifically for your requests. Hang in there. We’re getting close! XOXO
